Your Guide to Getting on the Water at Lake Dillon
Just a short drive from Breckenridge, Lake Dillon offers a quiet change of pace from town and a rare chance to get out on the water in the Colorado high country. With over 3,000 acres of surface area, it’s one of the largest bodies of water in the state, making it a true gem in a region where large lakes are few and far between. Wide open water, panoramic mountain views, and plenty of room to explore make it the perfect spot for a summer day. Whether you're planning to paddle, sail, or just relax by the shore, here’s what you should know, from where to rent gear to the best places to grab a cold drink afterward.

Jump In
Frisco Bay Marina and Dillon Marina both offer excellent access to Lake Dillon and a full range of water rentals, including paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, pontoon boats, and sailboats. You’ll also find guided boat tours at both locations, whether you're in the mood to sail or prefer a more relaxed pontoon cruise.
At Frisco Bay Marina, you're right at the edge of Frisco’s charming Main Street and close to several quiet coves that are ideal for paddling. It’s a great place to start your day on the lake, especially in the morning when the water is calm and the mountains reflect off the surface.
Dillon Marina offers similar options with an active sailing scene and a sailing school for those who want to learn the basics. With the Tenmile Range rising in the background and easy access to the Dillon Amphitheater and recreation path it’s a great hub for getting out on the water and exploring the area.

Explore on Two Wheels
You don’t have to be on the water to enjoy the lake. The Dillon Reservoir Recreation Path is an 18-mile paved loop that winds around most of the lake, offering open views and quiet spots to stop and take it all in. It’s an approachable ride for casual cyclists and families, and it connects the towns of Dillon and Frisco with several scenic spurs.
Need gear? You’ll find bike rentals in both towns. In Frisco, check out Rebel Sports or Podium Sports. In Dillon, Christy Sports is a reliable option right near the marina.

Where to Eat and Unwind
After some time on the lake or trail, you’ll want to refuel. Both marinas make it easy to stay close to the action.
At Frisco Bay Marina, grab a table at Island Grill. It’s a laid-back spot with casual food, lake views, and live music during peak summer afternoons. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need to change out of your flip-flops.
Over at Dillon Marina, check out Pug Ryan’s Lakeside Tiki Bar, a summer-only outpost of the local brewery. It’s right on the dock with picnic tables, burgers, and cold drinks. This spot is a favorite for locals after an afternoon on the water.

Local Tips Before You Go
Here are a few things we always recommend to friends planning their first lake day:
- Reserve ahead. Paddleboards, pontoon boats, and sailboats book quickly, especially on weekends.
- Start early. Mornings usually bring calmer water, open parking, and fewer people.
- Check the forecast. Storms can build quickly in the afternoon. It's best to be off the water by early afternoon.
- Pack layers. Even warm days can turn breezy or cool by the water.
- Watch your elevation. You're still over 9,000 feet. Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and pace yourself.
