Autumn Activities in Breck

The Rocky Mountains are known for expansive views and vibrant fall colors. From mid-September to early October Summit County is enveloped with the golden glow of changing Aspens. The crisp fall air brings a new chill, but something about layering up and going out for a hike or fall colors drive feels nourishing to the soul.

The high country is perfect in the fall. But where is the best places to soak it all in? Here are some of our favorite fall-colored adventures and events to hit in Breckenridge:

Our Favorite Fall Leaf Peeping Places

Boreas Pass Road –Breckenridge: This road is just outside of Breckenridge town limits. It provides stunning views of the Tenmile Range, Breckenridge Ski Area and Quandry, a fourteen-thousand-foot peak.

If you want to continue the adventure, drive 6 additional miles from the trailhead to the summit of Boreas Pass. There is ample parking at the Boreas Pass summit. The famous “Golden Tunnel” is just that. It’s an archway of changing aspens that glow simmering shades of red, yellow and orange. The road tends to get busy, as it’s accessible by foot, bicycle or car. Don’t attempt this viewing route if you’re in any hurry!

Boreas Pass Road begins in Breckenridge and follows the old railroad line into the town of Como in neighboring Park County. There is a dramatic change in landscape once you come down the backside of the pass. The mountains part into fields and rolling hills. You can see for miles! You can stroll the streets and funky shops of Fairplay and Alma if you head over the pass.

Rainbow Lake- Frisco:  Downtown Frisco is a short 9-mile drive from Main Street Breckenridge. This family friendly 2-mile hike leads you from the trailhead to a high alpine lake. Thick Aspen groves illuminate the hiking trail in the autumn months, but it’s amazing year-round.

After leaving Boreas Pass Road, head back to Main Street Breckenridge to enjoy lunch or dinner on the patio at The Canteen right on Main Street. You can sit in the sun on the deck with gorgeous views of the Ten Mile Range.

After leaving Rainbow Lake, head back to scenic Main Street Frisco to enjoy breakfast or lunch at The Butterhorn Bakery. This is a locals favorite serving up fresh salads, sandwiches on homemade breads and a daily soup selection.
